FARMS AROUND THE WORLD IS ALL THE "BUZZ"

Ed Mabesoone learned about Farms Around the World through a monthly agricultural newsletter. His farm, The Mabesoone Family Apiary, is located in Brooksville, Florida, and specializes in beekeeping. He became interested in the project because he likes that it exposes children to the world of agriculture. During the visit of a "flat student," he says, "We [apiary staff] will be removing, extracting, and bottling the fall crop of honey from our colonies as well as harvesting and rendering the beeswax from which we make lip balm, skin cream, furniture polish, and candles. We will also be feeding and giving our bees medications, inspecting the colonies, and replacing some of the older queen bees that were not replaced this past spring." There are also other activities planned.

It's easy to see that life on a farm is never dull! Mabesoone has goals in mind for his interaction with Ross's third graders. "Over one-third of our food could not be produced without the pollination services that honey bees provide," he says. "I hope that this communication will help our children learn just how important this small insect is, and how important it is to make sure we continue to keep and maintain them [bees] in good health for a long time to come." He adds, "Some of our children may not quite understand what agriculture is all about at this time, but I am confident that by the end of this year's fantastic program they [these children] will understand the importance of all the different types of farms."
